Effect of Dilatational Strain on the Self-Trapped Exciton Luminescence of Alkali Halides

The effect of dilatational strain on the self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence ofalkali halides is investigated at 1 1 K by using thin crystals grccwn inside a narrow gapof the quartz cell. In strained NaBr, new lumincscence is found to appear around3.13 eV in addition to the well-known n emission. This luminescence has an excitalion threshold at the absorption band associated with spin-tr'iplet exciton states, andexhibits a long lifetime of 103 ps. The same emission band can be produced by caus-ing electrons to recombine with V. centers. It is pointed out that an expansion of thelattice parameter leads to an STE configuration of low symmetry, from which the3. 13 eV luminescence occurs. It is further proved that the dilatational strain has a considerable effect on the STEluminescence in Rbl, but not in KBr.
