Oblique-Incidence Reflection Spectra of Excitons in Uniaxially-Strained Alkali Iodide Crystals

Oblique-incidence reflection spectrum of the lowest Is exciton in alkali iodides hasbeen measured by using linearl)' polarized light for thin crystals of thickness - 0.1 7trnat 1 1 K. These thin crystals are deformed uniaxially because of the difference in thermal contractions between alkali iodides and quartz plates, details of which are dis-cussed. In Rbl and Kl, an additional structure appears on the high-energy side of theexciton band in the 7-polarized spectrum, and it becomes clearer with increasing theangle of incidence 0. From the 2-dependence of the line shape, it is concluded that theadditional structure is attributed to the longitudinal excitons becoming observable bya uniaxial stress.
