X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of metal tungstates, MWO_4, has been carried out to investigate the electronic structures of scheelites (M=Pb, Ca, and Ba) and wolframites (M=Cd and Zn). Relativistic molecular orbital calculations of these tungstates have also been performed. The theoretical results are discussed in comparison with the previous band calculations, and are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the XPS spectra. The valence and conduction bands are mainly composed of the O 2p and W 5d states, respectively, in all cases. It is stressed that the metal states contribute, to some extent, to the top of the valence band and/or the bottom of the conduction band in PbWO_4, CdWO_4, and ZnWO_4, but such contributions are negligible in CaWO_4 and BaWO_4. The similarity and difference of the fundamental optical spectra among the tungstates are explained on the basis of the present results.
