Relaxed Exciton Luminescence Induced by the Structural Phase Change in Ammonium Bromide

When the tetragonal INN phase of NH.Br crystals is "frozen" upon rapid coolingfrom room temperature down to 10 K, a new lurrvinescence appears at 3.0 eV in addilion to the 4.18 eV luminescence arising from self-trapped excitons in the cubic IVphase. This luminescence band is found to decrease in intensij.y with a complementaryincrease of the 4.18 eV bancl as the crystal is warmed abovcc 50 K. Measurements ofthe excitation spectrum, decay time and linear j>olarization confirm that the 3.0 eVluminescence is due to a radiative transition frona the triplet state of self-trapped ex-citons in the III phase structure involving the displacement. of Br ions from theircubic lattice sites.[photolurninescence,l bromideself-trapped exciton, phase transition,ammonium
