The effect of dilatational stress on tlte relaxation of excitons in Nal is investigatedby means of photoluminescence and decay time measurements. When the lattice spac-ing is expanded, a new ltuminescence band, which is ascribed to the self-trapped ex-citon in off-center configuration, appears around 3.05 eV in addition to the 77 band at4.15 eV. The decay profile of the n band, consisting of 1.2-ns and 110-ns decay corn-ponents, is not affected by the lattice expansioua. The 3.05 eV band exhibits two decaycomponents of 6.0 ns and l .5 p s. These lil'etimes are significantly longer than the cor-responding values of the n band, indicating that the electron-hole overlap is smallerfor the 3.05 eV-luminescent state. The relaxation processes of a free exciton into theself-trapped state in alkali halides are discussed with the help of the present andprevious results.alkali halide, Nal, thin crystal, free exciton, self-trapped exciton, dilatationalstress, exciton relaxation, adiabatic potential energy curve, photoluminescence, synchrotron radiation
