Thin crystals of Kl and Rbl with 0.1 X 10 pm thickness have been grown from themelt inside the narrow gap of a quartz cell, and their absorption and reflection spectrahave been investigated near the fundamental absorption edge at 11 K. In bothcrystals, when the thickness is decreased to ?0.5 pnn, additional absorption bandsare found to appear just below the n=1 and n=2 exciton bands. With furtherdecrease in the thickness, they become intense and shift to low,'er energy. These addi-tional structures are attributed to the pure triplet exciton states induced by the strainsin thin crystals. This assignment is discussed in terms of the exciton model in alkalihalides.
