Chemical Bonding in Zr-Ni and Zr-Ni-D Alloy Glasses Observed by Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy

Electronic states in Zr-Ni and Zr-Ni -D alloy glasses are studied over wideranges of nickel and deuterium concentrations by measuring Zr L/?.,.. andNi Lrx.,. emission bands. Zirconium Lfi.,.5 is modified deep in the band whileNi Lot.,. undergoes a minor change near the Fermi edge. These spectra suggestthat chemical bonding among constituent atoms affects the band structures ofthe glasses significantly. A sign of preference for Zr -D bonding to Ni -D bondingis observed and its effect on the band structure is discussed.
