Characteristics of Soft Core in Pair Potential and Static Structure in Liquid Metals

The relationship between a pair potential solved by the Born-Green equation and a static structure observed by X-ray or neutron diffraction was discussed for 21 liquid metals and four rare-gas liquids. A soft repulsive core in the pair potential was found in liquid metals, which corresponds to rapid damping of the oscillation in the structure factor in the high momentum transfer region. It was shown that the structure factor of liquid metals can be classified in the three groups using the ratio of the position of the first peak maximum to that of the second peak maximum as a useful parameter.
