An attempt has been made in this work to cover recent information, particularly regarding the compositional effect of metalloid on the structure of metallic glasses of transition metal-metalloid systems. Based on previous experimental data and model calculations, the concept of two amorphous structures (the Bernal type and the Chemical Order type) is suggested as a novel description for the structure of metallic glasses of transition metal-metalloid systems. For metalloid-poor glasses characterized by the Bernal type structure, the dense random packing of metallic elements plays a significant role in the structural behaviour, although the local ordering in the near neighbour region is close to that of the Chemical Order type. On the other hand, the Chemical Order type structure is recognized for metalloid-rich glasses in which the local ordering attributed to the chemical bonding nature dominates the structural behaviour. This novel picture could explain the different behaviour of glassy Fe-B alloys from other metallic glasses such as Fe-P and Pd-Si.
