In the X-ray diffraction patterns for liquid mercury at -35°, -15°and 15℃, a difference of the X-ray scattering intensity between the sample molten after once solidified and the sample condensed after once evaporated has been observed at values of sin θ/λ= 0.185 A^<-1> and 0.233 A^<-1>. These positions correspond to the X-ray diffraction line from (100) plane and (101) plane of α-Hg (in the solid state), respectively. Such a difference in X-ray scattering intensity corresponds to the thermal hysteresis of viscosity coefficient. From these results it was deduced that some fine crystalline exists as a metastable state in liquid mercury near the melting point.
