Protuberances of Plasma Pressure Caused by Moderately High Power Microwaves in a Corrugated Wall Waveguide

Protuberances in the axial direction in an ton saturation current created by microwave pulsesexternally injected into a plasma-filled corrugated wall wavegtride are observed experimentally.This phenomenon is observed for moderately high microwave powers above a threshold value.Such protuberances are not observed in smooth cylindrical plasma waveguides. Protuberances inthe axial density profile and peaks in the standing waves of the axial RF electric field are alwaysobserved at identical axial positions, at which the radius of the corrugated wall is minimum. Aphysical interpretation of the observed restmlts is discussed in detail.
