Linear Analysis of a Localized Plasma-Loaded Backward Wave Oscillator Driven by an Annular Intense Relativistic Electron Beam

The linear theory of electromagnetic radiation from a localized plasma-loadedbackward wave oscillator with sinusoidally corrugated slow wave structure driven byan annular intense relativistic electron beam has been derived and analyzed numeri-cally. The enhanched radiation from a plasma-loaded structure is attributed to the in-crease in the spatial growth rate of the absolute instability. The backward waveoscillator instability without plasma is found to be most effective in a case where thebeam travels near the wall of the slow wave structure. For the given number ofplasma particles per unit length of the structure, the decrease in the plasma columnradius enhances the output radiation.Ilinear analysis, plasma, intense relativistic electron beam, slow wave structure, ll backward wave oscillator, radiationl1
