Experimental Study of a High-Power Backward-Wave Oscillator Operating Far from the Upper Cutoff

The characteristics of a high-power backwstrd-wave oscillator (BWO) operating far frotaa thetrpper ctrtoIT, i.e., "m" tnode of a corrtrgated wavegtuide, are investigated experitaaentally. Thehigh spectral purity of' output power of' the TNIg) ttaode is tnaintained for large beana ctrrrents,becatuse the starting currents of device have large valttes in this regixaae. It is observed that,when the beatn ctrrrents are less than the starting cturrent of the TIVIOI naode, hybrid TBj3mode is excited in the BWO. Peak otutptrt powers of 5.3lVIW at 7,2GHz in TEII mode and6.8NIW at 8.5 GHz in TIIVIOI rnode are generated. The conversion efficiencies are abotrt 13% and11%, respectively. These experirnental resvrlts indicate a possibility of inaproved performance inhigh-power and high efficiency relativistic BWO by controlling the operation regime.
