Excitation Characteristics of Ion Waves in a Negative Ion Plasma

Excitation and propagation of ion waves in a negative ion plasraaa are investigated nunaericallyand compared with the experittaents xvhich luave been perfortned tmsing Q-raaachine and natrltidipoledc discharge device. The dispersion relation of the ion waves derived from coraventional cornplexc;-plain procedtrre cannot explain previovrsly observed simultaneous propagation of the fast andthe slow unode. Spatial excitation coefficients of the slow tnode, which are calculated frorncouaaplex A'-plain procedture, are cortaparable to that of the fast unode. Furtherraaore, if there existsa plastna ion flow which decreases danuping of both rnodes, the spatial excitation coefficients ofthe sloxv rnode xvill increase. FIOIII this point of view, the sirnultaneotns propagation of bothnaodes may be possible under 21 certaita laboratory condition. Also the direct calctrlation ofwave potential is presented. In the region not too close to the excitation point, the principalunode which propagates in a negative ion plasuna is fotund to be the fast mode. In the case whereT.. : T. and there is a finite ion flow, the interference pattern b etween the fast and the slow raaodeappears in the vicinity of the excitation point. Finally, xve cotnpare the restults with laboratoryexjceriments. Our nttnaerical calculations qtralitatively explain the previotus observations of theslow naode.
