Instability of Harmonic Responses of Onchidium Pacemaker Neuron

Three kinds of chaotic responses of Onchidium pacemaker neuron to a sinusoidalcurrent stimulation have been classified by means of stroboscopic mapping. The map,however, failed to show that the random alternation between harmonics is a deter-ministic chaos. In this paper, trajectories in a three-dimensional phase space, (I, V,V), and return maps which are obtained from intersections between trajectories and aplane, U=const., are investigated. The random alternation is also shown to be sub-ject to a deterrninistic law. Moreover, all of the chaotic responses observed in theneuron are caused by instabilites of two kinds of harmonic responses and randomjumps between the responses. Two types of instability were observed. Each combination of the two types of instability corresponds to each chaotic response.
