Characteristic Behavior of the Fluctuation of Flow Caused by Electrohydrodynamic Effect in MBBA

In the course of the successive transitions caused by the electrohydrodynamic instability in MBBA, the fluctuation of the transmission of light is measured as a function of applied voltage. For both transition from Williams domain structure to a structure with grid pattern and that from grid pattern to non-periodic flow, it is confirmed that the critical regions are very broad with strong non-linearity, which bears strong resemblance to phase transitions in thermal equilibrium systems. Mode-softening is apparently found at the instability points.
