Pattern Formation,Defect Motions and Onset of Defect Chaos in the Electrohydrodynamic Instability of Nematic Liquid Crystals

Pattern formation processes and the associated defect motion are experimentallystudied for various rectangular cells in the electrohydrodynamic instability.Wavenumber selection arises from the competition between the growth of the mostrapidly growing mode and the finally stable mode iru the Willianns domain (WD) state.Defect motion is associated with such a competitive growth into the final stage. Thefluctuating WD (FWD) is strongly related to the oscillatory gliding motion of defects.Temporally nonperiodic change of the number of defects is observed in the FWDstate with a power spectrum of 1 / f type (defect chaos). A large hysteresis is observednear the onset of FWD. A detailed phase diagram of stable convective patterns in theplane spanned by the threshold voltage and the applied frequency is presented withthe characteristic behavior of defect motions.
