For polyatomic quenchers there is a fairly accurate linear relation between σ<SUB>Q</SUB><SUP>1⁄2</SUP> and <I>r</I>, where σ<SUB>Q</SUB> is the quenching cross-section of rare gas metastables (especially Ar(<SUP>3</SUP>P<SUB>2</SUB>)) and <I>r</I>, the effective radius of the quencher.
