Spontaneous Nucleation of Turbulence in Electrohydrodynamics and Its Similarity with Crystal Growth

The nucleation and the growth process of turbulent areas in the electrohydrodynamic convection in nematic liquid crystals is investigated. During thetransition from one turbulent state (DSMI) to another (DSM2), this fully dissipativesystem shows, on the qualitative level, a great similarity to classical nucleationphenomena. We found good agreement between the experimentally observed nuclea-lion rates and those from classical nucleation theory. The main difference between thetwo turbulent states is the density of disclinations in the director field.
