A Neutron Scattering Study of the Anharmonicity of Lattice Vibrations and Its Relation to the Melting of NaF

Starting from a viewpoint that melting phenomena are caused by an instability of thelattice vibrations, neutron scattering studies were made on NaF to see how theanharmonic interaction of phonons develops with in<xreasing temperature. The phononfrequency shift and the damping of the [1 101 TA. mc>de were measured as functions ofwave number and frequency over a wide range of ternperature ft'om 300 to 1250 K. Attemperatures very close to the melting point 7'=== 1266 K, high u(q) phonons areheavily damped, but low u(q ) phonons are still surprisingly stable. A marked freq uencysoftening was observed only for this mode; no evidence for premelting phenomenacould be seen, and T. appears quite suddenly. It is ?trgued that T.. will be determinednot by the bulk but by the surface potential.
