Neutron Scattering Study of the Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet VBr_2

Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering experiments on VBr. single crystalshave been performed to study magnetic properties of the S=3/2 Heisenbergtriangular-lattice antiferromagnet. Bragg intensities are consistent with the N<Set(120') structure having average moment<.5>/.5=8385Z in the a-c plane. Thedispersion relations show a two-dimensional character and are described by thespin-wave theory with exchange constants J= 16 K and J'=O.2 K. A preliminaryinelastic measurement on VCI. gives J=22 K and J'=0.I K. The magnetic diffusescattering observed in the previous powder pattern is found to be inelastic. Theunusual decrease of magnetic Bragg intensities with lowering temperature isattributed to the polarization of "V nuclear spins due to hyperfine interaction.
