Observation of Linear and Nonlinear Relaxations of Fluid Dynamical Motion in Liquid Crystal

Tlae fluid motion induced by the external electric field in nematic (7-ethoxy-benzylidene)-7-butylaniline was observed by detecting the electrical conductivity.Tlte relaxation tinte of this nvotion was determined in the cases of the linea?' andnonlinear responses. The resczlts are analysed on the basis of the idea that theconvection instability can be c[escribed as a second order pltase transiti<>n, andare consistent with tlxc tin?e dccpendent Ginzbttrg-Landau theory within the 1110-Iecular field approxintation. It gives an example of the linear-nonlinear erossoverbehavior of the critical exponent of the relaxation titne.
