The ordinarv and the extraordinary' refractive indices of Cdlz, CdBrz andCdC1z sinsle crvscals have been measured at room and Iictuid nitrosen tempera-tures in the resion from 7000 A to the shorter wavelensth UP to the absorptionedge. The measurements have been carried out bv an interference method inwhich both indices can be determined together with the thickness of the samplecr>'stal. The results show birefrinnent or>tical characteristics or the negativecrystal. The characteristics are interpreted in terms of dichroic abso?-ption. Thedispersion behavior of the indices in the energy region well below the absorptionedge is analyzed using a single-effective-oscillator model.
