de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations of LuNi_2B_2C in Pulsed High Magnetic Fields

• We have observed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the borocarbide superconductor, LuNi_2B_2C, under pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. The observed oscillation frequency, 288±7 T, corresponds to a cross section of 2.75×10<-2>± 0.07×10-2Å^<-2>. The temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude provides a cyclotron effective mass of m^*_<ab>=0.55±0.18 m_e in the ab plane. By comparison with the results of band structure calculations, the oscillation can be assigned to a Lu 5d band which forms a small Fermi pocket near the Г point. These results support the validity of the band structure calculation as a good starting point for understanding this class of superconductors.
