High-Field Magneto-Optical Study of GaAs/Al_xGa_(1-x) As Short Period Superlattices

Magneto-optical spectra of the type I(GaAs),/ (A1..Ga. ..As), (x : 0.5) short periodsuperlattices have been investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 40 T. In twosamples with (m, n)=(6, 6) and (7, 5), formation of fairly wide minibands in theperpendicular direction to the layers resulted in only small anisotropy in observedreduced masses of electrons and holes with respect to field configuration, and smallbinding energy of heavy hole excitons. Calculations of magnetic energy levels wereconducted within the frame work of envelope function formalism for magnetic fieldparallel to the layers. The calculated results were found to be in excellent agreementwith the experimental results, implying the validity of the effective mass approximalion for these values of m and n.
