Magnetostriction of Bismuth and Graphite in Fields up to 40 Tesla

Longitudinal magnetostriction has been measured in bismuth along the binaryaxis and in graphite along the c-axis in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. Thefield dependence of the magnetostriction of bismuth is compared with theoreticalcalculations based on a model proposed by Vecchi et al. for the lowest quanttunnumber Landau levels. A better correspondence with the experimental result isobtained by using a set of parameter values recently given by Hiruma et al.rather than the original Vecchi et al.'s values. For graphite, a large and field-superlinear magnetostriction has been found.
