Coherent Kondo State in Amorphous Ce-Ru Alloy

In an amorphous Ce-42 at% Ru alloy produced by sputtering, the electronic specific heat coefficient rapidly increases with decreasing temperature, T, below 5 K. The magnetic susceptibility obeys the Curie-Weiss law above 100 K ; it is enhanced below 100 K and saturated below 6 K. The electrical resistivity, ρ, is large due to disorder scattering. With decreasing T, ρ increases for T>40 K, showing -log T dependence (the incoherent Kondo effect) and decreases for T<40 K (the coherent Kondo effect). The 4f electrons strongly correlate with the conduction electrons to form the singlet Fermi liquid state even in the random alloy.
