A SAXS Study of an Al_<85>Y_<10>Ni_5 Amorphous Alloy Stress-Induced near the Glass-Transition Temperature

The medium-range structure of an Al_<85>Y_<10>Ni_5 amorphous alloys heat-treated under a one-axial tensile stress was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering, calorimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope measurements. Strong small-angle X-ray scattering intensity was observed for the amorphous ribbon annealed at 483 K for 900 sec under the tensile stress of about 10 MPa. This scattered intensity is considered to be originating from voids with sharp boundaries in the amorphous structure induced by the tensile stress. The radii of gyration of the voids are kept constant around 57Å while the number of voids increases with increasing the annealing time at 483 K.SAXSamorphous alloystress-inducedheat-treatment
