There have been many reports on the initial cell attachment and bone differentiation at hard tissue adjacent to yttria stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) and titanium (Ti) implants. The effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is a growth factor for bone regeneration around implant materials, on Y-TZP and Ti surface characteristics is not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorption of PRP onto Ti and Y-TZP surfaces using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). We fabricated Ti and Y-TZP sensors by coating thin Ti and Y-TZP films onto QCM electrodes using reactive direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was carried out to determine the chemical composition of the sample surface. The surface wettability of the Ti sensor was better than that of the Y-TZP QCM sensor. Compared with the surface of the Y-TZP QCM sensor, the Ti QCM sensor adsorbed more Sprague- Dawley (SD) rat PRP. These sensors are thus a potentially useful tool for the investigation of advanced implant materials.
