We attempted prosthodontic treatment with complete dentures to improve the symptoms of edentulous patients complaining of difficulties with ingestion and swallowing. The cases included a patient with dementia patient where the complete dentures allowed bolus formation and smooth transit to the pharynx. Treatment was done for a patient with Parkinson's disease patient where dentures with adequate intrercuspation improved chewing efficiency, bolus formation, and swallowing. Complete dentures were made for an elderly patient with compromised ingestion and swallowing where a increase the occlusal contact area and improvement in occlusal balance were attempted to enhance chewing efficiency and swallowing. Although chewing efficiency was improved, swallowing was not enhanced to the patient's satisfaction because of a decline in oral and pen-pharyngeal muscle strength, changes in the position of the larynx, and deterioration in coordination of the elevator muscles of the tongue and hyoid bone. Many elderly patients who need completes dentures have ingestion and swallowing difficulties for various reasons. Understanding their overall problems requires an interdisciplinary, team approach.
