Denture treatment for elderly patients with ingestion and swallowing difficulties

Complete denture treatment was done to help two elderly patients with done defects that caused difficulties with ingestion and swallowing. A maxillary prosthesis was fabricated for a completely edentulous patient with a cleft palate and insufficient closure of nasopharynx. Use of the complete denture improved masticatory efficiency and presented the bolus from entering the defect. Nasopharyngeal closure was accomplished with the complete denture, making bolus formation easier and improving swallowing. A maxillary prosthesis was made for another patient who had received segmental resection of the mandible. Prosthodontic treatment was performed on the patient because of a parenchymatous defect in both the mandible and maxilla, with associated motor dysfunction of the tongue. The maxillary denture was designed to allow easy contact of the back of the tongue with the palate. A paratogram was effective in determining the vertical dimension. Records of occlusal and swallowing sounds made with a gnathohexagraph confirmed improvement in the dysphagia. A denture was fabricated for the parenchymatous defects to restore aesthetics and improve chewing efficiency. However improving the Ability of Daily Life (ADL) in patients requires morphological modification of the denture to restore bolus formation and swallowing function in harmony with the patient's other oral functions.
