This paper reports a case where an implant-supported mandibular Overdenture improved the patient's seating and swallowing. Videofluorography (VF) and gnathohexagraphy with 6 degrees of freedom were used to observe eating and swallowing. The VF examination used a barium-containing jelly (Ba-Jelly) produced by mixing 200 cc of barium solution, 100 cc of water and 10 g of gelatin. Gnathographic measurements were made with a face-bow attached to the mandibular anterior teeth and microphones attached over the zygoma and the cricoid cartilage. Test food was ingested and swallowed to observe jaw movement, and the sounds of occlusion and swallowing. VF and gnathohexagraphy revealed that the time required for bolus formation and the number of chewing cycles were both less with the implant supported denture than with the conventional one. The patient improved her eating and swallowing functions with the overdenture. It created a favorable oral environment that improved chewing efficiency and tongue movement.
