Using videofluorography (VF) with barium containing jelly (Ba-jelly), we investigated ingestion and swallowing in people wearing complete dentures who had no masticatory abnormalities. Ba-jelly was prepared by mixing 100 cc barium solution, 200 cc water and 10 g or 20 g of gelatin. The VF images were processed through a video tracking method. The travel of the tip of the bolus after formation was recorded every 1/30 of a second with centric occlusion as the starting point. It was found that the bolus tended to have a longer oral phase, and that the rate of movement of the tip accelerated as it passed through the anatomically narrow segments while going from the oral cavity to the mesopharynx, the mesopharynx to lower pharynx, and from the lower pharynx to the esophagus. The transit time was greater with 10 g of gelatin in a 300 cc solution than with 20 g and the oral phase was shorter. Videofluorographic observation provided valuable information on ingestion and swallowing of the complete denture patients. The author would like to compare function in complete denture patients complaining of ingestion and swallowing difficulties with healthy complete denture users.
