Two diterpenes, galanolactone (I) and (E)-8β,17-epoxylabd-12-ene-15,16-dial (II) were isolated as the main compounds from rhizome of ordinary small type Japanese ginger (Zingiber officinale) generally called "Kintoki (金時)." Known pungent compounds, [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, [10]-gingerol and [6]-shogaol were also isolated.
