Pharmacological Properties of Galenical Preparations-5-Antibacterial Activities of Chinese Medicinal Prescriptions "Haino-to"(排膿湯) and "Haino-san"(排膿散)

The in vitro antibacterial activities of the two Chinese prescription, "Haino-to" and "Haino-san", and individual constituent cruge drugs were examined using 25 Gram-positive and negative bacterial strains. Both Paeonia and Glycyrrhiza extracts were formed to be more active than other extracts tested. Surprisingly, the Platycodon extract, the common principal constituent of these formulas, did not show any antibacterial activity. No significant antibacterial activity was observed in "Haino-to", which is commonly used for the treatment of pyogenic infections. The antibacterial activity of "Haino-to" was, if any, lower than that expected from the antibacterial activities of the constituent drugs. The results thus suggest that the effects of these Chinese decoctions on reducing the size of carbuncle is apparently not directly related to the in vitro antibaterial activity.
