• N, N-dimethyl-5-methoxytryptamine (5), a plant hallucinogen, and N-methylanthranyl-amide (6) were isolated from the fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa HOOK. fil. et THOMSON (Chinese plant drug) (Rutaceae). Radioactive N-methylanthranilic acid (7) and N-methyl-anthranyltryptamide (8) were given to the above-mentioned plant. The feeding experiments showed that N-methylanthranilic acid (7) is a precursor of evodiamine (1) and rutaecarpine (2). The role of N-methylanthranyltryptamide (8) in the biosynthesis is also discussed.
