A retrospective sketch of the works on the biologically active principles of traditional Chinese drugs, which have been performed by the author and his collaborators during past 40 years at the laboratories in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tokyo and later in Meiji College of Pharmacy is described. It includes the scientific investigation of the thousand year-old crude drugs stored in Shosoin at the beginning of this series of works, studies on medicinal plants cultivation in correlation with the production of their chemical principles, studies on Pueraria root, Paeony root, Ginseng, Zizyphus seeds, Aralia cordata root, Periploca sepium root, Bupleurum root, Platycodon root, Gleditsia fruit capsule, Entada bark, Licorice, Qian-hu, Allium bakeri tuber, Pinellia ternata rhizome. The chemical modification of glycyrrhetinic acid in reducing the side-effect and enhancing the therapeutical activities is discussed. Some physiological and pharmacological activities of the isolated chemical principles from the above mentioned drugs are also described.
