Local and seasonal variations of the amounts of five alkaloids, evodiamine, rhetsinine, rutaecarpine, evocarpine and synephrine, and one triterpenoid, limonin, in fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa, E. officinalis and E. bodinieri (Rutaceae), which are original plants of a Chinese natural medicine "WuZhuYu", were investigated. The limonin and synephrine contents varied considerably depending on the localities, but the variations of evodiamine, rutaecarpine, evocarpine and rhetsinine contents among the seven localities were comparatively narrow, though the materials from Banxixiang (= E. rutaecarpa) contained only very small amounts of evodiamine, rutaecarpine and evocarpine. The present study also revealed that E. officinalis and E. bodinieri had a higher rhetsinine contents than E. rutaecarpa. E. officinalis was distinguished from E. bodinieri by the higher evodiamine contents. Therefore, the results suggested that the three species were distinguishable from each other by the evodiamine and rhetsinine contents. On the six compounds, the evodiamine, rutaecarpine and evocarpine contents increased, and the synephrine and limonin contents decreased as fruits maturated. Whereas the rhetsinine contents remained almost constant during the fruit development These seasonal changes were found in common in the three species.
