Previous studies on the essential oil components in Atractylodes lancea, A. chinensis and A. koreana growing in China, the botanical origins of the Chinese crude drug, "Cangzhu" (Soujutsu in Japanese), showed that there are three types of A. lancea. In the present investigation, 216 A. lancea plants were collected in 9 localities in the Qinling (秦嶺) mountains ranging from Shanxi to Henan and the Mt. Songshan (嵩山) in Henan, the boundary area between the habitats of A. lancea and of A. chinensis, and their rhizomes were assayed for 6 essential oil components by gas chromatography. Atractylodin (6) was detected in all the examined plants. A. lancea of the Mt. Songshan was distinguished from those of the Qinling mountains on the basis of their components: The eight populations of A. lancea growing in the Qinling mountains contained hinesol (3) and β-eudesmol (4) as the major components, with no detectable amount of atractylon (2). Whereas, A. lancea growing in the Mt. Songshan contained 2 and especially 6 in large amounts, and 3 and 4 in small amounts. Thus, the essential oil profile of A. lancea of the Mt. Songshan in Henan was found to be similar to that of A. lancea of the Mt. Maoshan (茅山) in Jiangsu province reported previously; both these places are described as the "Cangzhu"-producing district in the old literatures. Similarly, essential oil profile of A. lancea of the Qinling mountains was included to be similar to those of Hubei and Anhui provinces.
