The effect of a Chinese medicine, which has been widely used for the treatment of digestive disease in China, on the age-related morphological changes in the intestinal villi of mice was studied by electron microscopy. The preparation contains: Pogostemon cablin BENTH (herb); Perilla frutescens (L) BRITTON var. crispa DENCE. (stem and leaf); Vladimiria souliei LING, (root); Citrus tangerina HORT. ex TANAKA (pericarb); Anemarrhena asphodeloides BUNGE (rhizome); and Gallus gallus L var. domesticus BRISSO (gizzardskin), all were from Sichuan Province in China. The age-related changes of intestinal villi in control mice included decreased villus height, increased crypt height, and roughening of the surface of the villus epithelial cells. In the mice orally given the Chinese medicine, these age-associated changes were inhibited. It was demonstrated that the prescription is effective to maintain the normal morphology of the intestinal villi in mice.
