Very-Low-Frequency Response of a Nonlinear Urethane-Urea Copolymer Optical Modulator : Optics and Quantum Electronics

Optical sensing is a useful tool for voltage measurement, and has many desirable features. However, so far there is no practical optical DC or low-frequency voltage sensor, mainly due to the DC drift problem associated with the modulator. In this study, we fabricated a Mach-Zehnder interferometer-type optical modulator using a newly developed nonlinear urethane-urea copolymer. From its low-frequency test response characteristic, we concluded that this modulator could be used down to 5 MHz, and that it could exhibit an improvement of three orders of magnitude in low-frequency performance when compared with a conventional LiNbO_3 optical modulator. From a mechanistic investigation of the low frequency response, we showed the possibility of extending its use even further in terms of still lower frequency applications.
