Surface relief gratings on azobenzene-substituted urethane-ureacopolymer films with large second-order nonlinearity are fabricated bya laser-interferometric method. The surface relief structures areobtained upon exposure to an interference pattern of a polarizedAr+ laser beam, which mainly results from photoablation. Thegratings are thermally stable at temperatures higher than glasstransition temperature (Tg) of the copolymer. The surfacerelief gratings with second-order nonlinearity are fabricated after acorona poling process. We report what we believe to be the firstexperimental observation of the separated second-harmonic generationfrom the fundamental wave by the surface relief grating withsecond-order nonlinearity.
