Effects of External Modulation Signals on the Tracking of Resonance and Antiresonance of Piezoelectric Resonators

The phase-locked loop developed previously for the tracking of resonance and antiresonance of piezoelectric resonators is examined with respect to the stability against external modulation signals in the form a sin 2πƒ_0t. A PZT resonator with ƒ_r=68.1 kHz and ƒ_a=82.3 kHz is used as a sample. The critical amplitude a_c, beyond which phase lock is lost, is measured for each value of ƒ_0. The value of a_c increases discontinuously at a critical frequency, ƒ_c, of 150 kHz. In the freqeuncy range between ƒ_c and 500 kHz hysteresis is found in the relationship between a and the width of the power spectrum. No hysteresis is found if ƒ_0<ƒ_c. This behavior can be explained by an inhomogeneous second-order differential equation.
