Generalized Mean Relaxation Time Formalism for Activated Rate Processes without Manifest Detailed Balance

The naeaza relaxation time forunalisraa enaployed previotrsly in the soltmtion of one-diznensionalFokker-Plartck equations is extended to a general difl'trsioua process in arbitrary diunensions. Thetrtility of the approach is dernonstrated by calculating analytically the rate of taoise-inducedtransitions itt a bistable systena xvithottt tnanifest detailed balance. The rate formtrla obtainedsummarizes ira a trnifortm znanner nnuch of xvhat had lceen dozae before ir? this field. Lirmitations ofits validity are discussed and a perturbation procedtrre to systetnatically iraaprove it is proposed.The validity of our tlaeoretical predictions for the rate is cor'xfirmed by comparing xvith exactntmrtuerical restrlts.
