Sonochemical Oxidation of Iodide Ions in Solution Undersaturated with Ambient Gases

Sonochemical oxidation of I^-_3 has been carried out in atmospheres of nitrogen, oxygen, air, and argon in the pressure range between 40 Torr and 760 Torr. The ambient gases have been dissolved by two methods: distillation and bubbling, with the former leading to undersaturation. Except for nitrogen, no simple relation exists between the reaction rates for the gas-undersaturated solutions, kg, and those for the gas-saturated solutions, k_S. In some cases the values of K_U are five times greater than those of K_S in spite of the reversed order in the gas concentration.
