Effects of External Modulation Signals on the Tracking of Resonance and Antiresonance of Piezoelectric Resonators II. : Two Types of Sinusoidal Modulation

Computer control has been introduced to the tracking system based on a phase-locked loop. The system is examined with respect to stability against external modulation signals of the form a_0 sin 2πf_0t. Two modes of modulation have been adopted : (i) sudden application of the signal at t=0 and (ii) adiabatic alteration of a_0. The critical amplitudes a_c above which phase lock is lost are measured for f_0 below 300 Hz. Above the critical frequency, f_c≈155 Hz, the hysteretic amplitudes a_H and a_L are also measured in the adiabatic mode. Computer simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results except for f_0>f_c in the sudden modulation. It is suggested that f_c is closely related to a characteristic time t_c for the lock acquisition process with no modulation signals.
