Theory of average dielectric constant developed by Genzel and Martin isgeneralized to the case of randomly oriented ellipsoidal particles having aniso-tropic dielectric constants. Effects which result from the mixture of different typesof particles are also incorporated in the theory. The generalized theory is appliedto the calculation of infrared absorption spectra of Zn0 small particles. Thepresent calculation can reproduce fairly well the experimental spectra of Zn0smoke reported by Yamamoto et al.
