Phase Transitions in Gas-Evaporated WO_3 Microcrystals: A Raman Study

Temperature dependence of Raman scattering from gas-evaporated W03 has beeninvestigated. From a comparison between the present Raman data and that of thebulk crystals, it is shown that the phase transition behaviors of the microcrystals arecompletely different from those of the bulk crystals. At room temperature, the possi-ble phase of the microcrystals is the mixture of phases V and Vll of the bulk crystals,which is supported by the X-ray diffraction measurements. At around 230 K, themicrocrvstals xraduallv underzo a r>hase transition, transforminu into a new r>hasenot reported so far or a mixture of phase Vll and the new phase.
