Electron Donation from Cyclic and Respiratory Flows to the Photosynthetic Intersystem Chain is Mediated by Pyridine Nucleotide Dehydrogenase in the Cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 : ENVIRONMENTAL AND STRESS RESPONSES : MEMBRANES AND BIOENERGETICS

The redox kinetics of P700 induced by far-red light and a pulse of strong white light in wild type cells were compared with those in NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (NDH)-defective mutants of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803. The wild type cells showed the electron donation from the respiratory' donor and the photoreductant generated in PS I to P700^+ through the plastoquinone, which is mediated by a H^<2+>-sensitive enzyme. The NDH-defective mutant cells, however, did not show the electron transfer to P700^+ through the plastoquinone from both the photoreductant in PS I and cytosolic electron donors using pyridine nucleotides as an intermediate. Thus, NDH appears to be the site of main entry of electrons into the plastoquinone pool in the NAD(P)H-mediated cyclic electron flow and the respiratory electron flow in Synechocystis.
