Porous polytetrafluoroetylene (PTTE) tubing was set in a sake mash or ethanol solution (sampl). Distilled water was poured into the PTFE tubing, and was then circulated as an absorption liquid (absorbent). The temperatures of the sample and the absorbent were kept equal. After the compositions of the sample and the absorbent reached equilibrium, the concentration of ethanol (C_E) in the sample was estimated by using the C_E in the absorbent and the non-volatile component in the sample. When empty PTFE tubing was used, 3 h were required for the two liquids to reach equilibrium, presumably because the rate of mass transfer is small in liquid-membrane-liquid-type membrane distillation (LML-membrane distillation). When PTFE tubing packed with glass beads was used, the time required until equilibrium decreased to about 70% of that with the empty tubing. When the C_E in the sample was estimated by using the C_E in the absorbent determined by gas chromatography, the estimated values almost coincided with the C_E in the sample as determined by the official method of the National Tax Administration Agency. When the estimation was done similarly by using a semiconductor-type alcohol sensor, the errors in the estimated value were 2-9%. These errors were decreased by reversing the flow derection of the carrier gas in the alcohol sensor. No effect of glucose in the sample on the activity coefficient of ethanol was detected by this method.
